‘I want you all to know that I have decided that from this day forward I will say whatever I please, even if others do not agree with me.’

This full-voiced declaration of freedom out of the mouth of a slightly-built, sweet-tempered, otherwise soft-spoken, congenial woman (known as the Grandma of the parish) stunned us all. The occasion was a church gathering that also happened to be this woman’s 93rd Birthday. Who knows exactly why turning 93-years-old triggered her to wake up and say, ‘I have been quiet long enough – it is time for me to speak my truth.’ Fortunately, all of us present (including her family of three generations who also were longtime parishioners) moved quickly past our initial shock (‘who is this woman?’) to welcome the change and support her in expressing her full truth. As it turned out she gave herself a grand birthday gift — a gift that we all had the joy of watching her unwrap.
How many women have you seen step into a full, more life-giving part of themselves in their nineties, or even eighties? My experience is that it is rare for a woman to do so in these later years unless she has been on a well-established, self-discovery journey for many years prior. More times than not, if a woman makes the effort to learn the way of her Soul’s Truth and let her life be an expression of this Truth, she commits herself to the journey in her sixties, and in fewer cases in her early seventies. Often by this stage of life, we have awakened to the reality that life is not a dress-rehearsal — that it is too short and precious to play small by not allowing ourselves to discover and embrace the fullness of our uniquely designed God-given lives. For some of us, as you may well attest to by your own experience (as can I), this reality is underscored by a life event that confronts us.
For me, this wake-up event was marked by the day I turned 60. My birthday gift was being released from a 13-day stay in the hospital. My time there, much of which was spent in intensive care, included almost dying twice, signing end-of-life papers, and having surgery. The recovery process was intense and long. Up until this unforeseen ordeal, I had always been healthy. To say the least, this event gave me cause to re-elevate what my deeper Truth was and ask myself if I was being ‘True to the Bone’ in living it.
How free are you to be ‘True to the Bone’ in living your life? The more consciously attuned we can be to our Soul’s truth, the more we inspire and encourage others to do the same. Learning to listen profoundly and express fully our Soul’s Voice is a gift we can give to ourselves, each other, and the world. As with all change efforts, moving past the habitual barriers that have dictated how we show up in our lives takes courage, intention, practice, and loving Soul support.
